JOB DESCRIPTION: SPEECH LANGUAGE PATHOLOGIST

Qualifications:

1.    Shall hold a Master’s Degree in Speech-Language Pathology

2.    Possess appropriate licensures:

a.    Ohio Speech and Hearing Professionals Board Licensure

b.    Professional Pupil Services Licensure

c.     American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA) Licensure

 

Appointment:

The speech-language pathologist shall be awarded a teaching contract by the Board of Education. The speech-language pathologist shall be employed for the regular school year at the appropriate step on the negotiated salary schedule.

 

Role/Responsibilities:

The speech-language pathologist is responsible to building principals at assigned buildings. The speech-language pathologist provides direct diagnostic and therapy services to students, participates as a member of the special education team, and serves as a consultant in the area of communication development.

 

Duties:

1.    Shall make recommendations to building administrators and the Director of Special Education regarding policies and procedures for the provision of speech-language service in accordance with the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA).

2.    Shall visit each assigned building on a regular weekly schedule, consult regularly with principals at these centers and establish a regular schedule of diagnostic and therapy services at each center.

3.    Shall provide speech-language screenings for incoming preschool and kindergarten students.

4.    Shall assist with follow-up audiometric screening or threshold testing of students with suspected hearing problems.

5.    Shall provide multifactored evaluations for students with suspected speech-language delays and disabilities

6.    Shall participate as a member of the multifactored evaluation team and administer appropriate communication evaluations to students with suspected disabilities that are referred through the IAT process.

7.    Shall participate with the special education team in designating students eligible for speech-language therapy services based on adopted eligibility requirements and state standards.

8.    Shall develop Individual Education Programs (IEPs) for students eligible for speech-language therapy services.

9.    Shall work with the building principal in ensuring that all due process procedures are followed for the identification, placement, and periodic review of students with speech-language impairments.

10. Shall participate in regularly scheduled special education team meetings.

11. Shall coordinate efforts with special education teachers in providing speech-language therapy as a related service.

12. Shall develop and implement a regular schedule of therapy in accordance with the level of service specified on each student IEP.

13. Shall plan for and carry out therapy sessions designed to meet the needs of each student through group or individual instruction.

14. Shall consult with parents and teachers regarding the needs of students enrolled in the therapy program.

15. Shall provide periodic assessment of students’ progress in meeting therapy goals and report this progress to parents each time midterms and/or grade cards go home for all students.

16. Shall administer comprehensive re-evaluations to students enrolled in ongoing therapy at least once every three years in accordance with state standards.

17. Shall consult with the building principals and other appropriate administrators regarding budget and program needs and submit requisitions for necessary supplies, materials and equipment in accordance with district purchasing procedures.

18. Shall provide for an annual inventory of program materials and for the safe storage, repair and replacement of equipment used in the program.

19. Shall cooperate with appropriate community agencies, resources, and facilities providing speech, language and hearing services.

20. Shall assist teachers and other school staff in classroom-based accommodations, modifications and interventions for speech-language delays and disorders.

21. Shall serve as a consultant on curriculum projects related to communication development.
